Resources aimed at children are very in at the moment.
Here is a roundup of some books for sale. I'll review each one here when it arrives.
I've been very quiet here at Aoteatech recently. Not because nothing is happening, but rather because what I am working on recently has been absorbing all of my time! I have been developing electronics courses for years 9 to 11. Getting things working so that they work first time for kids takes a lot of testing and thought!
Here is a video showing how to attach the P9000 motors to the tamiya gearbox. Using multi strand wire and header pins. The capacitors are to absorb the noise from the motors so that this electrical noise does not flow back to the sensitive chips.
I have been invited to present something on Databases for the Auckland NZACDITT Symposium on Saturday 19th November.
Here is the blurb for my presentation...Databases in the new digital information Achievement Standards are required for Level 2. It makes sense to start teaching them at Level 1 and it makes sense to use a robust industry standard database that can be used for Level 3 information, Level 3 media or Level 3 programming. Max thinks that the best choice for this database is the open source free MySQL Database used by web applications all over the Internet. Max will lead you through the basics of MySQL, using a free online version so there is nothing to install. He will show you how to assess using this database for 91071, providing an assessment, marking schedule and exemplars for this standard. Then, if time permits, Max will teach the concepts and implementation of relational databases required for Level 2.
The Aoteatech Store is growing and items are selling. This is fantastic as it provides encouragement for us to produce more really cost effective, teacher friendly resources. The open marking schedule on most assessments means everyone is really clear about the requirements of the standards and the task and the feedback is that students are self assessing before they hand in their projects resulting in greater success.

Aoteatech has just finished it's first commercial Joomla website creation project. The school wanted a website that was easy to update and keep current.
Taking the documents from the parents handbook and the standard Joomla setup a dynamic easily updatable website was put together.
MySQL is a great database. It is industry standard, and yet with phpMyAdmin it can be accessed entirely online, without a single install required.
This makes it a great starting database for Digital Information. When you notice that Databases are required at level 2, I feel that you really need to include them at level 1 to start building those skill levels.
After lots of playing, updating and re formatting of some of the resources that I use with my students, the Aoteatech Store is open for business. http://store.aoteatech.com
All the resources at this store are designed to make life easier for teachers. They have been priced in such a way that they are very affordable. When compared to the time it would take a teacher to produce them they are great value. They can be reused year after year.
